Funeral Dove Releases

A profoundly symbolic ceremony of peace, hope, and spiritual ascension.

The Ceremony

The release of a White Rock Dove from a decorative basket over the casket represents the spirit of the deceased ascending to heaven. Three additional white doves are then released from a cage, representing the Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

As they take flight, the single dove and the three will meet in the air and all fly home together, symbolizing divine guidance of the beloved into eternity.

The doves circle once after release — as if to say good-bye — before journeying home.

"This expressive ceremony provides the bereaved with a beautiful visual representation of their loved one's spirit ascending to heaven."

Symbolic Meaning

Releasing doves uplifts the eyes, signifies beginnings and endings, joys and sorrows — true celebrations in flight.

White doves have long been a universal symbol of peace and the soul's journey onward. At a graveside or during a funeral service, the sight of doves rising gracefully into the sky offers comfort and a sense of beauty even in moments of grief.

Heavenly Doves has performed ceremonies at locations throughout Virginia and North Carolina, including the Nansemond Suffolk Cemetery, where white doves soared over the burial site in tribute to the departed.
